Synopsis
Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch. As the headstrong young girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, she discovers a world of spells and potions, and a mysterious song that may be the key to finding the family she has always wanted.
The latest film from the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and more) is directed by Goro Miyazaki (From Up on Poppy Hill, Tales from Earthsea) and produced by studio co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with planning on the feature from his father, Academy Award®-winner Hayao Miyazaki. Featuring the voices of Richard E. Grant, Kacey Musgraves and Dan Stevens, Earwig and the Witch additionally features an English language theme song performance by six-time Grammy Award-winner Kacey Musgraves. Based on the children’s novel by Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle), the film marks Studio Ghibli’s first 3DCG animated feature.

Once upon a time, some very masochistic representatives from the Dwango Artificial Intelligence Laboratory decided that it would be a good idea to invite Studio Ghibli co-founder Miyazaki Hayao — cinema’s greatest animator, in addition to being one of its most reliable…

The best thing about Earwig and the Witch is that it makes choosing the worst Studio Ghibli movie really easy.

I expected to not like it bc of what people said about it, but I did actually enjoy it. Really, my only two complaints are the animation and the ending. I couldn’t watch it in Japanese, and the animation style made it way more apparent that it was dubbed haha but I got over it.
Quality was horrible and the movie did not give me the “studio ghibli” kind of vibe at all. Not only was the story line bad but the main character is basically just an annoying, ungrateful little brat who only cares about herself. The movie made zero sense.
i didn’t think i’d like it because it’s very different to other studio ghibli films, but i actually liked it a lot! the story is great and although the style is different it works well. the only thing i didn’t like is how rushed the ending was, but other than that it was great!

way better than I expected it to be after watching the trailer, at the very beginning I though it wouldn’t be that good but idk why I underestimated Studio Ghibli. I actually really liked it so I’m glad I didn’t skip it.
easily the weakest ghibli film of them all. though i think it was cool of miyazaki to experiment into 3D animation, i don’t think it should ever really be tried again. just didn’t feel ghibli at all.

Surprisingly lacklustre selection from Ghibli. I appreciate that they branched out into 3D animation but the story wasn’t all that interesting.
Music was great but the main character was mid. Lowkey kinda disappointed seeing as this is a Miyazaki film

Kudos to Goro Miyazaki! I am a late boomer but have always loved the Studio Ghibli films, every since I saw Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I'm hardly the targeted audience. This was a very good film. Every time I thought is was going to be predictable it veered…
MGMinerva GarciaThis movie was a beautiful train wreck with probably the catchiest song ever. The visuals weren't the worst but could have been better and the story was awkwardly adapted, leaving more questions than it answers. Definitely felt very unfinished but I will be watching this…
ATAxel TalaveraThis is a great movie. the animation is smooth, the music is great, and the cast fits well. However, I do feel that the movie's ending was a bit rushed and abrupt.

Weird cut off at the end hour mark, like they didn't finish the movie. Left me disappointed.

ABAnnalee BlackWhat you would expect from a ghibli movie. The new 3DCG was an amazing experience.
