Synopsis
Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch. As the headstrong young girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, she discovers a world of spells and potions, and a mysterious song that may be the key to finding the family she has always wanted.
The latest film from the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and more) is directed by Goro Miyazaki (From Up on Poppy Hill, Tales from Earthsea) and produced by studio co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with planning on the feature from his father, Academy Award®-winner Hayao Miyazaki. Featuring the voices of Richard E. Grant, Kacey Musgraves and Dan Stevens, Earwig and the Witch additionally features an English language theme song performance by six-time Grammy Award-winner Kacey Musgraves. Based on the children’s novel by Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle), the film marks Studio Ghibli’s first 3DCG animated feature.

I expected to not like it bc of what people said about it, but I did actually enjoy it. Really, my only two complaints are the animation and the ending. I couldn’t watch it in Japanese, and the animation style made it way more apparent that it was dubbed haha but I got over it.
nico dislikedEarwig and the WitchQuality was horrible and the movie did not give me the “studio ghibli” kind of vibe at all. Not only was the story line bad but the main character is basically just an annoying, ungrateful little brat who only cares about herself. The movie made zero sense.
harry likedEarwig and the Witchi didn’t think i’d like it because it’s very different to other studio ghibli films, but i actually liked it a lot! the story is great and although the style is different it works well. the only thing i didn’t like is how rushed the ending was, but other than that it was great!

way better than I expected it to be after watching the trailer, at the very beginning I though it wouldn’t be that good but idk why I underestimated Studio Ghibli. I actually really liked it so I’m glad I didn’t skip it.

Turnip likedEarwig and the WitchI love the animation. Earwigs mom is so fine. It was a wholesome movie tbh. Didn’t go anywhere but it was cute to see the family that adopted earwig come together once again thanks to her happiness

Miss Honey is "meh" onEarwig and the WitchThe animation was so bad 😭 The story was okay. I wanted to see Earwig reunite with her mom so bad. The cliffhanger ending annoyed me. Also Earwig was kinda annoying. Definitely didn’t have the typical studio ghibli vibe. Probably wouldn’t watch again.

For one, it’s the abundance of red herrings in this fleeting 82-minute feature; connections and relationships are implied (and a plot point about a witchy rock band flies by) but end up leading to dead ends, making the journey feel incomplete. But the most regrettable part is the animation.

Gorō is a talented director. The individual shots of Earwig are beautifully composed, the characters are delightful (the tiny demons who wait upon Mandrake seem destined to become merchandise hits), and the film’s flimsy plot isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But the visuals sink the entire enterprise.
