pd187Oct 2, 2023Understated dialogue is overrated. Next time I have a bad day I'm gonna scream "This is my penance! Do you hear me o' Lord?! THIS...IS...MY PENANCE!!
Neill ShaughnessOct 25, 2015My idea of a 1931 movie is something like Dracula or one of those early Garbo talkies - static camera, awkward dialogue, millions of rats, etc. - but this has the visual acrobatics of a silent movie, opening on an extended POV shot for no particular reason and very rarely…

Hyde's treatment of Ivy is textbook abuse, so much so that at its most harrowing the scenes between them begin to seem less like a horror movie and more like some Lynchian, surreal exploration of an abusive relationship. But this time around I was struck by how clearly the…
JoeSep 4, 2014One of cinema's best early-era horror films, Rouben Mamoulian's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a muscular, superbly acted, and handsomely crafted film. As strong superficially as it is internally, the horror outing combines visual atmosphere and thematic undercurrents to form…
Travis LytleOct 22, 2016Since the writing of the novel and the filming of this movie fashion may have changed, language may have changed, film style may have changed, social customs may have changed, but unfortunately, men haven't.

Why the hell do I have to call him MISTER Hyde. Why is the living embodiment of the repressed darkness within man so formal
brendan o'hareNov 7, 2022"I've played with dangerous knowledge; I've walked a strange and terrible road. Help me to find my way back!" No study of pre-Code cinema would be complete without an appraisal of Paramount's 1931 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for many people still the gold…
theironcupcakeApr 5, 2019Mamoulian camera work often gets a lot of credit (as it does in most of his early work), but best contribution here is how he patterns the film on his casting of March, at the time known mostly as a romantic lead. This Jekyll and Hyde is all about libido, Hyde is pretty…

In the lead role, Fredric March's transformation from Jekyll to Hyde is still startling and, frankly, terrifying. The superb makeup was certainly part of it, but March's skill was the finishing touch.
holy smokes this is good… granted it is a typical film of its time, loose plot and only really highlighting the theme, but that’s all you need. Fun watch beginning to end.

This is just as much a Frankenstein story as it is Jekyll and Hyde. Who is the real monster: Hyde for his acts, or Jekyll for taking the serum again after experiencing its initial effects?
An astonishingly incredible performance paired with groundbreaking filmmaking techniques exploring the evil that lies within all men and is still unfortunately relevant to this day.
