Clay Werner lovedDawn of the Planet of the Apes9.2 - Incredible sequel. Every set up from Rise is paid off. Matt Reeves can really build a gritty, lived in world. The CGI is even stronger and more real feeling, the action is intense (chimps on tanks w/ AKs!), and the story really steps up with more ambiguity and tension.

The tonal switch from the first movie to this one works so well since the focus switches once apes. The plot is compelling obviously but it’s the characters that drive this story really. The amazing motion capture performance that Andy Serkis gives as Caesar is unbelievable.

Dawn is not just a good genre movie or a good summer movie. It's a great science-fiction film, full-stop, and one of the year's very best movies so far.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes manages to do at least three things exceptionally well that are hard enough to pull off individually: Maintain a simmering level of tension without let-up for two hours, seriously improve on a very good first entry in a franchise and produce a powerful humanistic statement using a significantly simian cast of characters.
