THE DREAMED ADVENTURE is the most unjustifiably overlong film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It spends an exhausting amount of time establishing its world and characters (at least an hour), and even once the stakes finally seem to get going, the film never escalates…

I found the pace to be just right, alternating between 20 minutes awake and 20 minutes asleep

My favourite film experience of SFF2026 The disarming quality of smile is the most surprising notion explored in this study of people and place. Archeologist Veska (Yana Radeva), is continually meeting new people in the rural town she’s leading a small excavation near,…

NYFF #3 Will be honest, the real reason that I picked this one was mainly because, since I knew that I wasn’t going to see many films at NYFF this year, and so a rule I made for myself was to try to see a film that was distributed by Janus Films, since I’m a huge criterion…

Reading the “popular” reviews…why do so many people who seem to despise cinema get to go to Cannes?

This year's MIFF slogan is "eye-opening cinema," and with my first experience at the festival being 'The Dreamed Adventure', it already got totally justified for me. Valeska Grisebach comes back after a long absence with her new Cannes Jury Prize-winning slow-burning epic…

I have never been to these places, but it’s clear that everyone dresses like it’s 1996 and is somehow a gangster (connected or not) — the leisurely pace here will likely be a deterrent to more ardent genre cinephiles but this is as engrossing a crime film as I have come…

Valeska Grisebach doesn’t repurpose the tropes of the western into a modern setting so much as diffuse them into the atmosphere to give subtle structural signposts to an otherwise drifting anti-narrative.

Like many films at the festival this year The Dreamed Adventure is too long, but a running time of almost three hours does let you get under the skin of Veska, played with grit, soul and wit by Yana Radeva.

This is a film of details and detours, digressive above all, cast with non-professionals native to the region. It plays as an ethnographic travelogue, using a potboiler hook for lightly applied narrative structure.
