The lady introducing this at the Melbourne Film Festival said that it was "a gender bending movie". So at some point I was waiting for Elijah Wood to start transitioning until I finally realised she meant to say genre bending.

I really like this movie! I don’t want to give to much away but the movie you think you start out with isn’t at all the movie you end with. It is listed as horror but maybe grindhouse but not horror! Check it out!

Therapeutic for anyone with daddy issues, a crush on Michael Smiley, a tendency to always call Wood that 'chap from Lord of the Rings, a dream of living outdoors and intentions to try that erotic asphyxiation thing. It'll cure you of all of the above. The less you know…

Unfortunately, the movie is far more effective in its first half than its second, which degenerates into cheap shocks, absurd plot contrivances and vulgarism for its own sake (including an excrement-covered pen). It's a shame, because the opening section proves deliciously unsettling, thanks to the screenplay that keeps you off-balance and the terrific performances.

Come to Daddy has twists galore, not to mention a heavy dose of gore, but the further it drifts from its initial understated dynamic, the less each successive development seems to matter.

Come to Daddy starts out like a nasty drama, ends up as a gruesomely gory, coldly comic revenge thriller – and desperately loses its way somewhere in-between.
