this had been described to me as “what if A24 made a gay Big Daddy,” and… well, yeah, exactly. Turns out that’s a pretty great combination of things to be in the right hands! funny, understated, surprisingly moving, has an incredible björk t-shirt… overdelivers on all…

With sweet brio and an electrifying depiction of its world, Jordan Firstman’s feature directorial debut, Club Kid, feels no need to reinvent the wheel of movies about losers who’ve yet to grow up.

As an actor, Firstman really comes into his own here, able to remove his persona exterior for moments of bracing vulnerability. It’s a fantastic performance.

Club Kid has real potential to break out bigger than its seemingly niche scope would suggest, with Firstman finally shirking the ironic pose he’s taken online for years to emerge as a sincere storyteller with heart as much as humor.
