DO ᵈᵒ ᴅᴏ dₒ do
LucySep 3, 2017In the doc that precedes the 40th anniversary release, director Denis Villeneuve suggests the movie is a personal one for Spielberg beyond his obvious fascination with the material. He says the movie is about movie-making too, which struck me as a little trite – and cliche…
Adam KempenaarFeb 16, 2021A movie about the importance of leaving your wife and kids in order to pursue your passion (to fly in a UFO).

Oh so THAT'S where that scene in Monsters vs Aliens came from
James (Schaffrillas)Sep 16, 2013Oof, I'm ready for the blow back. Guys, gals, I really did not enjoy "Close Encounters." It was way too long, kind of boring, and the story is nearly nonexistent. What's going on here? Richard Dreyfuss is visited by aliens, goes crazy, and abandons his family to party with…
DanSep 4, 2017Our debt as a society to Steven Spielberg is completely unpayable.

And on top of everything else François Truffaut is there for some reason
KarstenNov 18, 2016100 (35mm, Director's Cut) If Jaws was the rise of the commercial blockbuster - albeit one with sharp, savage technical bravura and small character dynamics - then Close Encounters was the setting sun of abstract, sprawling, experimental science-fiction. Spielberg's…
SilentDawnMar 28, 2023What makes this science-fiction drama/conspiracy-thriller so special and poetic is that you can watch it as a kid (like I did) and simply go oh hell yeah UFOs are REAL and the government is LYING to us and we should go on an adventure to prove that there are cool little…

I didn't mind the slow boil, and was intrigued, but I didn't really buy into the characters or enjoy journeying with them. Roy's character development and motivation for his choice are absent or unconvincing. I liked the air traffic control scene and the overall air of mystery at the beginning. …
If you want a movie that will leave you wondering how much time is left until you realize the slow pacing and poor writing will eventually lead to nothing…Look no further! The middle of the film is hard to watch and ultimately pointless. All the positive reviews = nostalgia 5.5
The hook of a movie should interest the audience and make them question whats going on. Sometimes the answer to the question, the reveal, is a little over done, annoyingly stretched out across the movie, leading to a disappointing watch This movie had me locked in

After Jaws Spielberg made this wish was an flop then but I really had a good time watching this. The effects was kind of impressive for being made in the 70s and the score was just incredible. But the first half was not so great as the second half.
Now this is a piece of history, I enjoyed it very much. Me personally, I’m not the biggest Spielberg fan, but that’s just personal One thing I can say about Spielberg, is that he never fails to create magical moments and environments, and that’s why he’s one of the greats, he brings ideas to…
Decent watch, an older and long movie but the graphics hold up/ of the time. Put your fin foil caps up! I feel like this will be looked back at as a hidden in plain sight, Easter egg for the future type tease. They playing in our faces mama. The gals at the end were so cute 👽

I'm a little indifferent to it. The entire internet said to watch the director's cut, but I was left very confused. It seems as if the plot was moving linear, but the characters development was all over the place. Especially Roy's. Just very unorganized to me.
8.0/10 It’s good but there are issues - the cinematography is great, the acting is great and the concept is so cool - but you can really feel the run time at multiple spots and I thought Richard Dreyfus’s character made no sense and had a really weird ending
