Synopsis
Fathom Events and 1091 Media bring BLINK OF AN EYE to the big screen for an exclusive one-night event. Based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name, the film focuses on Michael Waltrip a perennial underdog, and Dale Earnhardt, the most feared & iconic driver in NASCAR history. On the fateful running of the Daytona 500 at the inception of the 2001 season, Michael Waltrip broke his 462-race losing streak in epic, but heart-breaking fashion, in what is considered the Super Bowl of motorsports. Triumph becomes tragedy, as Michael's best friend and team owner, Dale Earnhardt, crashes in the final lap - creating a shocking debt that is paid back in spectacular and dramatic fashion on Waltrip's emotionally-charged return to Daytona, and a race to the finish with Dale's son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. This one-night event feature featuring exclusive home video from the Earnhardt and Waltrip families and behind-the-scenes footage from the film.

We were at the Daytona 500 when this happened.

The interactions between these real-life characters are here recalled with fondness and rue by the surviving participants. Taublieb’s approach is straightforward, but also a little pedestrian.

Waltrip’s earnest and forthright narration lends Blink of an Eye its intimacy and insight.

That points to the biggest shortcoming of Blink of an Eye. It’s a seriously unchallenging documentary, one that has no contrary voices suggesting why Waltrip never won before Earnhardt took him on (More hard luck? Nobody says so, nobody asks.) and as it lapses into hagiography, borders on “NASCAR Sanctioned” and “Official Myth-Burnishing.”
