Synopsis

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

Trivia

  • Wesley Snipes wanted to play the Black Panther in the 1990s ever since Marvel approached him with the project, so he went to Columbia Pictures with a script. Given the limitations in special effects at the time, Black Panther's suit would basically be a leotard with cat ears. John Singleton was briefly considered as director, but this never materialized as Snipes insisted on keeping the story situated in Africa, while Singleton wanted to place the character in the USA during the civil rights movement. Another obstacle proved to be the fact that the name 'Black Panther' was still mainly associated with the militant Afro-American activist group. Snipes later worked with Marvel as the vampire hunter Blade in the Blade (1998) franchise, and kept his interest in a Black Panther film, but it never materialized due to disagreements over the script. Ultimately, he got too old to play the part, and Marvel decided to take the story into a different direction within their cinematic universe. Even though he wasn't part of the final project, Snipes has said that he supports the film and Chadwick Boseman's interpretation "1,000 percent".

Such a great movie and really shows how the Marvel universe can expand to Iornman, Cpt American, all the way to a film like Black Panther. This movie can stand on its own, with its plot and visual design, but Marvel has done it again!

I would give it more stars if I could. Marvel did an amazing job.

The actors are all seen to very good advantage. Boseman certainly holds his own, but there are quite a few charismatic supporting players here keen to steal every scene they can — and they do, notably the physically imposing Jordan, the radiant Nyong'o and especially Wright, who gives her every scene extra punch and humor.

Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) has fashioned a slightly more earnest variation on the typical MCU movie — one that is still fun and funny, but also rooted in a desire to speak meaningfully about racism, global culture clashes, and the tension between hiding behind one’s borders and helping outsiders in need.
