Moviegoers are saying
Kane Parsons' directorial debut at age 20 has created a polarizing horror experience that either completely immerses viewers in its suffocating liminal spaces or leaves them confused and wanting more. While some hail it as containing 'the most striking horror scenes of the decade' with heart-pounding found footage sequences, others feel let down by an overhyped concept that prioritizes visuals over coherent storytelling.

thenotoriousjacMay 20, 2026There are 2-3 bits in this that are among the most striking horror scenes of the decade, where you feel completely submerged in its liminal surroundings. Calling it just claustrophobic feels like a disservice - more suffocating. As with the original idea of the backrooms,…

Seren likedBackroomsAmazing set design, sound and world building- weak plot. It obviously intends to be ambiguous, but this is frustrating when the audience if left with so many questions. I was genuinely surprised when the credits started rolling as it seemed as though the plot had just picked up.

Cartis song has more of a plot than this movie. 5.6/10
zxki is "meh" onBackroomsBefore I mention anything else, I need to talk about the allegories because without recognising them, the film seems as bizarre as a Skibidi toilet. Mental health is, if not the running theme, specifically highlighted in the key dialogues with Mary in the beginning, middle, and end. I can't put it…

Casts a surrealistic spell that’s unlike anything else in contemporary cinema.

Backrooms is hard not to recommend as a genuinely surreal horror experience. It has shades of the two Davids, Lynch and Cronenberg, but with its horrifically rendered malformations, both architectural and organic, it also feels like a commentary on the risible rise of AI slop art.

If this movie was nothing but a sightseeing tour of disquieting office buildings Parsons probably could have gotten away with it. But the more 'Backrooms' tries to have a point, the more pointless it feels.
