Moviegoers are saying
This intimate documentary about André's terminal cancer journey has left audiences emotionally devastated yet strangely uplifted, with many reviewers struggling to even assign star ratings to such raw human vulnerability. André's relentless humor in the face of stage 4 colon cancer creates a viewing experience so personal that several critics felt like they were saying goodbye to a longtime friend, despite never knowing him before.

Steve Carell is playing a manically extrovert comedian getting a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Seth Rogen is at his side as his soulmate best friend, Lisa Kudrow as caring wife. even Jonah Hill is here as "Death Yeller". hell, Tommy Chong does appear as his father! here is the…
shookoneJan 25, 2025I can’t review this. This was a man’s life. We watched some very intimate moments happen right in front of us. So now it feels gross to give a star rating to this human. This was his magnum opus, his ode to life. It feels wrong to talk about specific shots or how well…
Hyrum ForstromDec 14, 2025Irreverent and moving at the same time. When Andre gets diagnosed with colon cancer, he decides to chronicle his journey of figuring out how to die on his own terms, and with his sense of humor still in tact. It’s sobering to watch Andre gradually wither away to his…

yes!!!!! life should be all about doing bits and being silly but also having immense love and care for the people and the world around you because that’s the most fun and beautiful thing you can do!!!!!!!!
sageMar 3, 2026I first saw this film at Sundance in January of 2025. I wrote then that my first instinct was to make a Cologuard joke because that felt like what André would have wanted. About two months later, my own father was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. I dropped everything…
Marya E. GatesJan 29, 2025I hope when I face death I can do it as André does: By turning it into some beautifully filmed content.

“People really tend to be very private about their weaknesses, about their vulnerabilities. So we paint the portraits that we want people to see. We create the vision of ourselves that we want people to see. But the most beautiful, most fascinating portraits are the ones…
Lexi AmorielloJan 31, 2025Cancer is no laughing matter, but Andre uses humor and insight to fight his recent diagnosis with stage four colon cancer. What an interesting life Andre lived. This is such a poignant, funny and tender documentary. I went in knowing nothing about Andre, and I came out with…

This is a cautionary tale, but it’s also a celebration of a life filled with crazy stories and lots of love.

Every life is a universe unto itself, and Ricciardi was clearly the kind of unique soul whose spirit enriched everyone around him, but its actually in the margins of this sometimes preening doc that Benna's film really hits its target. When the film rests, it destigmatizes a process that everyone will eventually go through (albeit in a range of ways).

Tony Benna’s irreverent, frenetic bio-doc “André Is an Idiot” is unlike any cancer doc you’ve ever seen.
