After a year full of films about domestic abuse from male directors, it's nice to have a woman tell a story solely focused on the victim. Its nice to have a story that doesn't let the abuser apologize. It is nice to have a story that isn't focused on revenge, but on…

this might honestly be the best use of casting anna kendrick i’ve ever seen, and i say that as someone who absolutely loves her in nearly everything i’ve seen her in. it’s perfect not because it’s a quintessential role for her, but because it plays both into and against the…

beautifully done film made with so much care and respect, anna did an amazing performance that left me speechless at every moment.  in times like these where most depictions of abuse leave me at the end of the film feeling very heavy and hopeless this movie gave me an…

Find yourself a best friend that has a beautiful country lake house for you to go and relax away from your abusive boyfriend. Mmmmm so dreamy. Great dramatic work from Anna Kendrick, she’s very reserved and quiet in her performance, the film is basically a closeup of her…

Doesn’t analyze its ideas nearly as much as it thinks it does, but the few tense scenes really elevate the rest. Also VERY practical wood-chopping tutorial.

Great performances all around with a brilliantly heartbreaking performance by Anna Kendrick, but the script needed more work. The movie just doesn't do enough.

Nighy feels like she’s finding her way in a new format. She’s got the hard part down, pulling off effective emotional beats even when the story seems to be operating on screenwriting 101 paradigms. All that remains is to find a script that’s up to the rest of it.

The larger problem is that there’s not enough here — in story terms or in the filmmaking — to sustain even the movie’s 90 minutes.

Ultimately, it’s about the bonds of sisterhood and how those who know you best and love you most can help you heal, or at least start you on that path. Its vagueness serves almost as a Rorschach test. How effective it is as a drama may depend on your perspective.
