Synopsis

The hottest comic in America, Sebastian Maniscalco joins forces with legendary Italian-American and two-time Oscar® winner, Robert De Niro (Best Actor, Raging Bull, 1980), in the new comedy ABOUT MY FATHER. The film centers around Sebastian (Maniscalco) who is encouraged by his fiancée (Leslie Bibb) to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo (De Niro), to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family (Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier, David Rasche). The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.

As the daughter of an Italian immigrant i was guaranteed to find this pretty funny, but it’s also refreshing that it just stays in its lane of being a classic, low stakes family comedy. Sebastian Maniscalco can be grating sometimes but I didn’t mind him at all here, and…

With all the negative and mixed reviews, I saw for this, I was expecting the worst, and maybe it was me just being more forgiving, but I found this decent. De Niro is pretty much on autopilot, but even then, he was pretty amusing. It sticks to a lot of conventions and…

saw this in theaters at 1:30pm. Only 4 people in the theater. 2 left about 30 minutes in after playing games on their phone the whole time, and 2 were older ladies who laughed the whole time. So did I!! it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen and I had the best time.…

I really loved this movie! Runtime was about 90 minutes but it was a well-paced film and the jokes were really good!! Great to see Di Niro and the cast have fun with it :) I give it a solid 9/10 please support these small indie films!!

I thought he was going to be more like himself, being a comedian, rather than a hotelier, and her parents like his wife; Jewish and in California.

Director Laura Terruso overlooks several comedic opportunities in About My Father. It’s as though she’s working from a script that’s been edited by someone who got the situations but not the jokes.

This is sit-com level material and, as such, there’s not much new or interesting that De Niro can bring to the proceedings.

It opts for too many broad, clunky or far-fetched beats to move the story and its requisite emotional needs forward, rather than weave a more organic, effectively lived-in and, yes, genuinely funny tale.
