Synopsis
An impossible story gets an incredible adaptation, courtesy of director Ava DuVernay’s singular vision. Thirteen-year-old Meg Murry (Storm Reid) struggles in her day-to-day life after her scientist father (Chris Pine) goes missing… until three mysterious beings (played by Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling) offer her the chance to travel across space to rescue him. Protip: when Oprah urges you to be a warrior – you listen! Joined by her brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and friend Calvin (Levi Miller), Meg visits incredible planets to combat the evil that threatens the universe using the only weapon she has at her disposal: love. Also starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Peña, and André Holland, DuVernay’s take on Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel is vibrant and heartwarming from start to finish. A timeless tale of light vs. darkness, A Wrinkle In Time reminds us that the most epic conflicts are the ones in our own hearts – and those conflicts are truly universal.

What follows is a phantasmagoria that is more cheesy than transporting.
Only Reid and Pine feel like they’re playing fully imagined characters, and DuVernay wrestles with how to make the overstuffed material both contemporary and timeless.
If anything, the trouble with Wrinkle is that you never really get a sense of DuVernay’s personal touch. In fact, it feels a lot like Brad Bird’s big budget, equally smarmy 2015 Disney film, Tomorrowland. Both attempt to be so broad and universal that they feel disconnected from anything human.
