This movie rips, the kinda flick that you catch late at a festival and love forever. The plot itself might be filled with things you’ve seen before but those contrivances are anchored to clever subversions and incredibly charismatic (mostly new) actors.
Kit LazerJun 16, 2025Between the constantly tense score, Danielle Deadwyler's fierce performance, and the silence followed by bursts of gunshots, this post-apocalyptic thriller had me almost hitting my son in the face a few times with my flailing arms. That's got to say something. (read more…

SydAug 20, 2025Banger!!! Probably already an underrated banger, but hopefully not an underseen banger! "40 Acres" doubles up as both a strong family drama and a gory survival thriller about a family of farmers struggling to keep their '40 acres' safe from a full-on militia in a near…

Boring & amateur. This was awful. I still think Danielle Deadwyler is a compelling actor, & can carry a film when it’s well written. It wasn’t her fault.

cobJul 2, 2025Still, there’s a tense beauty to “40 Acres.” Deadwyler’s forceful energy fills the frame; through her rigid stature and her cleareyed speech, she lends power and humor to this lovingly stern mother. Through wide shots and sweeping tracks, the cinematographer Jeremy Benning…

Great film-going experience. Everyone in the theatre seemed to be enjoying themselves from the edge of their seat. I was the only one in the theatre. However, the above statement still rings true. This may be my sleeper pick of the year thus far.
Sam DuKatz liked40 Acres90/100 great post apocalypse action/thriller. Sets the stage immediately w/ the opening scene. Establishes stakes and characters quickly.

Really liked it. Definitely worth a watch and the final battle was super suspenseful and interesting.
Dane liked40 AcresA solid film. I enjoyed the world building and the suspense. The family dynamics were fairly compelling. However, I do think the battle with the militia at the end wasn’t particularly exciting.

Danielle Deadwyler gives a steller performance as usual. This thriller that gets better once the Freemans isolation turns into invasion from the "others"...
Cinematic Joshua liked40 AcresA suspenseful Post-Apocalyptic Thriller that hammers home the importance of family and resilience while slowly revealing what still needs to be cultivated.
Rick loved40 AcresWhat an incredible Post Apocalyptic film. Great action and suspense. Awesome cast and characters. An intense ride.

A slow build of suspense steadies the pacing, allowing the audience to piece together the puzzle alongside the characters.

The depth of [Thorne's] characters, brought to life by a terrific cast, and tactile world building are what set 40 Acres apart. The setting feels authentic; you could imagine yourself living on this farm with this family.
