KarstenApr 1, 20132001:A Space Odyssey is quite simply the worst thing to happen to cinema ever. Its forced profundity has caused millions of people all over the world to force themselves to like what is quite simply nothing more than an exercise in style. Kubrick has no idea what he is…
Mary ContiAug 29, 2021Man invents tools. Man becomes slave to those tools. The tools start to behave like man so man brutally murders them. Man sees the cycle, sees everything, and transcends—goes nuclear space baby mode. The 4k disc looks very nice.

so people in the 60s thought that 2001 would be the peak of human intelligence and space travel but all we got was low waist jeans and shrek

vitaniDec 23, 2014Ever since I joined Letterboxd, nothing has scared me more than the idea of trying to write about 2001: A Space Odyssey. The fact that everything has "already been said" about this masterpiece has itself already been said so many times that there's not even an original…

cinéfila... 🕯️Aug 26, 2018“i can feel it. i can feel it. i can feel it” maybe the most monumental film in history, and even better on the big screen. and while rewatching it today, i finally realized why it hits me so hard every time: it doesn’t feel like fiction to me. i know it is, but it feels…
LucyFeb 21, 2013I had a disclaimer at the top of this review but everybody went off telling me how wrong I was anyway, so scrap that, you'll just have to remember that this is merely one person's opinion and that we're all entitled to one. First of all, I like Kubrick's films, love some…

8.8/10 this movie is so far ahead of its time and really prophetic almost - the ending totally caught me off guard and seemed like super disconnected from the rest of the plot - visually one of the best movies i’ve ever seen especially considering how old it is - goat sci-fi film
It was just so long and drawn out. I’m sure for its time it was incredible but I almost fell asleep from all the silence

I can’t remember the last time a film had my complete and utter attention quite like this one. 10/10
Pretentious filmbro movie about dudes floating in space. I guess if you like watching paint dry, this movie is for you.

An absolut masterpiece. One of the most unique, stunningly captivating endings in film. The best, and most well used soundtrack and cues I’ve ever heard. A well put together piece of ART. The use of silence, and tension building is amazing. 10/10 top to bottom. 1000% recommend.
Yes, it was ahead of its time by several decades, groundbreaking, and all of that stuff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it holds up today. And before you say anything, yes I understood it. Perfectly-directed slow burn with great philosophical themes. Not for me tho.

First time seeing this film in my life and it was at the 70mm Cinerama Dome. Was tripping balls the entire time.
Stanley Kubrick is a master of cinema, and this is one of many, MANY examples.
Metacritic
Something in its mandarin blankness and balletic vastness, and refusal to trade in the emollient dramatic forms of human interest and human sympathy. Kubrick leaves usual considerations behind with his readiness to imagine a post-human future.
The final passages are the most exultant in their taking us beyond ourselves into a wide-eyed state of untarnished possibilities; entirely without words, the film reminds us that, despite how far we’ve come, the real odyssey has only just begun.
