Each week on Atom Insider, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, Captain Marvel was finally dethroned by Jordan Peele’s second feature film, Us.

This Week’s Top Earner – ‘Us’

Expectations were sky-high for Universal’s Us, Jordan Peele’s follow-up to 2017’s wildly successful Get Out, and the new horror film did not disappoint. It’s now the second biggest live-action original feature to debut in the U.S. with $70.2 million. Worldwide, it’s at $87.1 million off of a reported budget of $20 million. Us is an instant hit, basically, and it looks like both fans and critics were lining up to see double this weekend.

Second Place  – ‘Captain Marvel’

After two straight weeks on top, Captain Marvel fell to #2, making $35 million domestically. It dropped 48% from last week, which is not as big a drop as the week before, interestingly. Carol Danvers is absolutely standing tall, of course, with a worldwide box office total of $921 million in its third week, which means it could hit a billion as soon as next weekend (it’ll be the seventh Marvel Studios film to do so).

And Third  – ‘Wonder Park’

Paramount’s animated theme park adventure film held its lead over Five Feet Apart just barely this weekend, collecting $9 million domestically in its second week. This is likely because the Nickelodeon movie is still playing in about 1,000 more theaters than the aforementioned teen romance flick. Wonder Park’s worldwide totals have reached $39.6 million, still far below its reported budget of around $100 million (some estimates say it’s possibly as low as $80 million). We’ll have to wait and see if audiences are willing to keep paying the price of admission for this kids ride, but for now, it looks to garner a net loss for Paramount.

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office

At #4, we have Five Feet Apart, which gained 63 theaters and made about $8.7 million domestically, cementing its modest hit status for Lionsgate thanks to a low $7 million budget now eclipsed by $32.7 million worldwide after two weeks. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dropped one spot as well to #5, making just $6.5 million domestically despite playing in over 3,300 theaters. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral dropped as well to #6 with $4.5 million domestically after a month at the box office.

As for #7, we have another newcomer to the Top 10. Gloria Bell (A24) had an expanded release this week, finishing at $1.8 million domestic. Pantelion’s No Manches Frida 2 dropped two spots to #8 with $1.7 million domestically, despite only being in its second week. At #9 we have The Lego Movie 2 (Warner Bros), which is seriously winding down with $1.1 million in its seventh week.

And last we have Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel at #10, making just a little over $1 million after six weeks. Worldwide, the James Cameron-produced action sci-fi is getting close to finishing at around $400 million worldwide off of a reported budget of $170 million. Considering heavy marketing costs, the film is probably making either small profit gains or breaking even, and in light of the Disney-Fox merger, there’s no telling if the studio will decide to keep this franchise alive.

And They’re Out

Only two films dropped off the Top 10 this week. First, Captive State (Focus Features) plummeted from #7 to #11 with just $918,000 domestic. This is despite playing in over 2,500 theaters. If you want to catch Captive State before it’s out of theaters for good, right now may be your best shot.

And after a long back-and-forth with the Top 10 thanks to Oscar season, Green Book (Universal) finally bowed out, dropping five spots to #15 with just $600,000. The film is still playing in 841 theaters after 19 weeks at the box office.

Check back with Atom Insider later this week as we preview all the new releases hitting theaters this Friday.
