Synopsis

An immersive archival documentary that depicts the four-day clash between the then-emerging World Trade Organization (WTO) and the 40,000+ people who took to the streets of Seattle in 1999 to protest the WTO Conference and the WTO's impact on human rights, labor, and the future effects of continued globalization.

While what we see on the streets of Seattle is engrossing and, at times, even startling, the lack of a singular protagonist keeps us from becoming as emotionally invested in the ultimate outcome of the protests as we might.

One of the more fascinating elements of the documentary WTO/99, directed by Ian Bell, is that while it visually suggests a relic, the political observations feel as predictive as they are reflexive.

WTO/99 sets out to correct misrepresentation by corporate media about the aims of the movement, but that attempt is hampered by the recycling of much of the same news footage from news broadcasts.
