Synopsis

When eccentric candy man Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) promises a lifetime supply of sweets and a tour of his chocolate factory to five lucky kids, penniless Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) seeks the priceless golden ticket that will make him a winner.     A classic for sure but I feel like nostalgia plays a huge role when people think about this movie. Growing up with RD’s novels I prefer Johnny Depp’s version as it’s closer to how I imagined Wonka to be.

    actually weird that I’ve never seen this and i used to love the Johnny depp one. Pretty good movie but Willy wonka was a bit coocoo for coco puffs like he was creeping me out a bit, watched with my dad and we giggled a bit so it was a good movie

    A timeless adaptation filled with catchy sing-alongs, charm, comedy, surreal absurdism, and a pinch of horror. Gene Wilder made the movie what it is, he truly embodied the character of Willy Wonka. No one will ever be able to do it better.

    Probably the best film of its sort since The Wizard of Oz. It is everything that family movies usually claim to be, but aren’t: delightful, funny, scary, exiting, and, most of all, a genuine work of imagination but it’s rather harsh and moralistic.

    Whimsical, timeless, and full of heart. The fact that the set was fully realized and not CGI… iconic. No Wonka can ever beat Gene Wilder. Some questionable things as the movie is a product of its time, but a solid watch nonetheless.

For a children's film, Willy Wonka is surprisingly malevolent, which is most of its fun. But the refreshing malice and twisted whimsy only kick into high gear after 45 minutes of plodding setup and film-padding songs.
