I’ll listen to anything the Hawkes have to say about art
DevonSep 11, 2023Love you Ethan! Next time for sure 👍🏼
Kyle AmatoSep 1, 2023Ethan Hawke clearly poured a lot of love into WILDCAT. Maya Hawke’s gives a fascinatingly complex performance & the cool-toned cinematography is often striking. However, they’re weakened by the fragmented use of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories & often bizarre, borderline…

TIFF 2023 Film 9 This is a very interesting way to tell a story about an author, one that I fear will end up alienating some. It's obvious Ethan Hawke has a great appreciation for Flannery O'Connor, and he tells this story of her trying to write her first novel by…

mescuntsMay 5, 2024I didn’t really care or think about this movie except Ethan Hawke is directing this, and Maya Hawke is starring in this. I was very interested to see what this would be especially being a fan of his work. I can say I had a solid time with this and it was cool to see him in…

Ethan Hawke's deep intelligence and fascination with the artistic process comes through in his work. Dig this one.
Brian TallericoAug 23, 2024Miss Hawke graduated summa cum laude from the Debby Ryan School of Acting with a major in wry wide-eyed smiles and a minor in tossed off snark
ivy wolkMay 17, 2024Q&A Screening at the Music Box with Director/Co-Writer Ethan Hawke. I’m an English major from the University of Iowa, so I got beat over the head with Flannery O’Connor while I was there. She’s one of the famous grads along with Kurt Vonnegut, Gene Wilder, the guy who…

A biopic/adaptation deconstructing the biopic and adaptation, whilst also exploring how life influences art. One of the great things in this film is how it shows the morals of the era and subject without censoring in fear of portraying the subject or place negatively.
Good to see Maya Hawke expand her range and Ethan’s take on the artistic process

Metacritic
Wildcat is an inventive and haunting mood piece with a number of memorable scenes.
Ethan Hawke attempts to breathe new life into the biopic structure with mixed results in “Wildcat.” What is certain is that he’s drawn a rich and multilayered performance from his daughter, Maya Hawke, in the starring role.
It’s emotionally exhausting, but audiences come away with a sense of her legacy, as well as an appreciation for the adversity she faced (and, to a lesser degree, a sense of the criticism that has been leveled against her).
