weirdly anti-Madonna
David SimsNov 4, 2022“You just killed Pablo Escobar!” —Madonna to Weird Al Yankovic, somehow To be honest, I was expecting funny and clever, but I was not expecting a multi-layered brutally self-deprecating meta comedic masterpiece.
benSep 8, 2022WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY turns the musical biopic on its head with an outrageously funny, not to be taken seriously parody. The best of its kind since Walk Hard. Daniel Radcliffe’s go-for-broke comedic performance easily ranks among his best. A wild riot of a good time…

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story does for the music biopic what the real Weird Al did for many a hit pop song: it makes fun of it, reveres it, remixes it, makes it weirder, and improves it.

Does it have moments of hilarity? Sure does. Does it run out of steam at times? Hell, yes. Is Appel a workmanlike director who mostly stays out of the way and lets his cast deliver the laughs? Yep, though he does try to get fancy a few times, with mixed results.

Eric Appel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is relentlessly silly, wholesome at heart and so stuffed with cameos it might give you the idea that a couple of generations of cool people love this guy.
