Atom User Reviews for True Grit 50th Anniversary (1969) presented by TCM
Really great to see this movie the way it was meant to be seen. The scenery of where this was filmed really stands out on the big screen. And the Duke ... well he is still the Duke !
The theater consistently has problems with these programs they either don't turn either the sound or the picture on. This movie still had about 10 minutes to rum when it suddenly went off. The less than five star rating is for the presentation, not the movie
My dad & father-in-law were both big John Wayne fans. I wish I could have seen it on the big screen with them.
Great memories with the family
Superb script and dialogues. Outstanding performances and the great scenery adds up for authenticity and becomes another character in the film. Quality film they do not make nowadays anymore.
The Duke on the big screen! Why would ya pilgrim?!
John Wayne is one of the top Movie stars of all time. His movies, his quotes, the characters he portrayed on screen are timeless. I wish someone somewhere could pick up where he left off. Great movie
Wonderful seeing it on the big screen, great cinematography!
Went to this with my father today, saw it as a kid with him on the first release, although I don't remember it. Was fun seeing cast members that I've since seen in other movies and TV. First time in a long time I've seen a John Wayne movie on the big screen. Glad I got the chance to see it the way it should be seen.
Seeing it tonight on the big screen was fantastic. Great scenery, acting, story, dialogue and music! Brings back memories of seeing it in the theater when it 1st came out in 1969. A great film!
Awesome to see such a great movie on the big screen again!
Love the Duke on the big screen!
A great movie and beautiful scenery!
Saw it originally in the theater. This is by far Wayne’s best picture and his performance is deserving of the Oscar.
In this movie John Wayne was the mean crusty old guy with the heart of gold. More facial expressions with one eye than other actors with two. Love the long shot from above the big shoot out. Did you notice how big John Wayne’ s horse was?
So fun seeing it on the big screen as it was back in the day the duke and very young Robert Duval doesn't get much better.
Saw it 50 years ago with my mom and just finished re-reading the book for the Big Read so it was great fun to see this on a big screen. I don't see many movies these days where people actually applaud.
Love this movie and John Wayne
Metacritic
The director, Henry Hathaway, is another old veteran, and the cinematographer is the great Lucien Ballard, but somehow it comes off like a TV celebrity roast.
One of the glories of True Grit is that it recognizes Wayne's special presence. It was not directed by Ford (who in any event probably couldn't have been objective enough about Wayne), but it was directed by another old Western hand, Hathaway, who has made the movie of his lifetime and given us a masterpiece. This is the sort of film you call a movie, instead of the kind of movie you call a film.
One of Hollywood’s true curiosities. At times a charming, kiddie Western, this John Wayne vehicle also has a real nasty streak.
