Moviegoers are saying
Reviewers keep coming back to Dominic Sessa, who one fan calls "absurdly good at being a sad boy in the 70s," and to the water-dumping scenes and the kitchen-as-crucible setup. The mood is warm and nostalgic, but a few viewers find the story too narrow, focused on one summer job, and question how faithfully the young Bourdain is portrayed. The tag-heavy praise (GREAT, INSPIRING, GREATCAST) outweighs the numeric scores, which sit mostly between 3 and 5 out of 10.

MGMyer Gotzthe young Tony was inept at everything. I bet Anthony Bpurdain was much more on the ball than portrayed in this movie.

It’s a summer that makes Tony question everything about himself, but Johnson’s film draws Bourdain into focus, despite his biopic resistance. Some answers may remain murky, but this shining jewel of a film makes one moment crystal clear.

There are so many episodes in Anthony Bourdain’s gritty, colourful, well-chronicled life that a biopic might have covered. That Tony is so enjoyable, despite biting off so little, is down to a chef’s-kiss fusion of the ingredients at hand.

Johnson has given us the prequel to a life. This is Anthony Bourdain choosing life and the world, finding his place in it through hard lessons, wild times, and good people he learned from in those early days.
