Synopsis
When Harlem schoolteacher Dorothy is miraculously whisked away to an urban fantasy land called Oz, she goes in search of the Wiz, a wizard who can help her get back to Manhattan, along with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

To compare this to the '39 (or any other version) is dishonest and disregards context and the black experience in America. This is a beautiful, magical film and I try to watch it every Thanksgiving.

A bit style over substance but a fair amount of substance. As for Dorothy and co, Diana Ross is a DRAG as Dorothy, just terrible. The supporting cast makes up for this because they (and their takes on the characters) are incredible. Every musical number is PHENOMENAL (minus Home)
KAYLIMANIZ lovedThe Wiz9/10 ICONIC and so fun to watch although it is cheesy and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. The soundtrack is so good and the cast is iconic. Don’t even get me started with the scene when they get to the Emerald City and everyone sings the green, red, and gold song.
Dart lovedThe Wiznow one of my fav musical movies. this was beautiful. the world-building and styles of art looked so good, matched by the wonderful performances of the actors, all pushed above and beyond by the incredible soundtrack. this was such a sweet and nice film to watch.

I remember watching this once when I was younger and thought the characters were kinda scary 😭 but as an OG Oz fan, I like the black version take. Forgot the plot, but the music was better than the original. ALSO why is the Queue trailer the entire movie lol
Obihulk lovedThe WizNow this is how you do a reimagining of a beloved classic. The Songs are fantastic and the cast is wondrous. I even say over and over again about how inconceivable it is that this film is considered underrated and I can understand why but it needs more love.

The movie has great moments and a lot of life, sensational special effects and costumes, and Ross, Jackson, and Russell. Why doesn't it involve us as deeply as The Wizard of Oz? Maybe because it hedges its bets by wanting to be sophisticated and universal, childlike and knowing, appealing to both a mass audience and to media insiders. The Wizard of Oz went flat-out for the heart of its story; there are times whenThe Wiz has just a touch too much calculation.
