Synopsis

Dev Patel stars as a mysterious British Muslim who journeys from London to Pakistan in order to kidnap a bride at her wedding. But it's okay - what seems like a crime (and, OK, to be fair is definitely a crime) was orchestrated by the bride’s secret lover, so that her arranged marriage could be avoided and they might be reunited.

Naturally things don’t go entirely to plan. One the “wedding guest” has done his work, the pair still has to get from Pakistan to India. Their journey is dangerous, and the potential for a blossoming attraction between the two could be their biggest problem.

I hated this movie. Wanted to leave the cinema hall, that's how boring it was.

Like the best noirs, The Wedding Guest is an efficient crime thriller that clocks in at around 90 minutes. It’s a B movie with style — the stuff that dreams are made of.

A thriller without thrills is merely a drama, and The Wedding Guest is a dull drama at that.

There’s also a broader commentary here on the treatment of women, both in arranged marriage and in testosterone-heavy thrillers. Apte’s character stays largely an enigma throughout, but her palpable frustration with the men and culture around her — plus the chance to vicariously visit Goa, that jewel of an Indian seaside getaway — makes The Wedding Guest worth an RSVP.
