Moviegoers are saying
Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a powerhouse performance in this divisive grief drama where a mysterious crow becomes an unlikely guide through loss. While some viewers found profound catharsis in its chaotic, unconventional approach to mourning, others struggled with its heavy-handed metaphors and uneven tonal shifts between horror, comedy, and drama.

BrandonLikesDec 2, 2025A very heavy drama, The Thing With Feathers, about a man mourning the death of his wife while caring for his children and being visited by a large crow, is a phenomenal representation of despair. I have never watched a film that was able to express what happened inside of…
AlliJan 25, 2025Grief and despair take on a physical, nightmarish form in THE THING WITH FEATHERS, Dylan Southern’s adaptation of Max Porter’s novel. While the grounded early sections of coping with sorrow resonated deeply, the fantastical heavy-handed metaphor felt less impactful as the…

Xavier Cruz is "meh" onThe Thing with Featherssurreal but mostly just sad montages. I'm sure it hits home for people experiencing grief and despair but it wasn't particularly cathartic or revelatory.

What’s crucially missing is detail, both in the characters themselves and the weight of what they’re going through.

Despite its shadowy visuals and insidious soundscape, it’s neither frightening enough to play like full-fledged horror, nor complex or curious enough to pack much weight as psychological drama.

If at times a little belabored. With an all-in performance from Benedict Cumberbatch and a unique visual style, The Thing With Feathers is an inescapably compelling drama — even if its concept is perhaps a bit more interesting than its execution.
