"It's a hard world for little things..." One of the all-time greatest. Horrific, mesmerizing, dark and lovely. Charles Laughton's enduring classic is hard to classify - is it a thriller? A horror movie? A fairy tale? A fable? It is all of these, and other things too,…
Mike FlanaganJan 16, 2021how can i see that underwater shot and be expected to live to see another day?!?! also Pearl’s head is the perfect Big Head / Little Face equation 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
sarah squirmApr 2, 2018went to a mystery screening tonight and when the opening credits started playing, i couldn't contain my excitement. this works on so many levels for so many reasons, even the occasional hokeyness adds a new layer to the sickly dark humor. but it's the cinematography and…

My girlfriend finally gets why I sometimes walk around the house going "LEANNINGGGG, LEANNNINNGGGGG"
Ethan ColburnJul 27, 2014The Night of the Hunter is a classic Gothic fairytale: an evil being charms an unsuspecting parent, while only the children are aware that things are not what they seem. It was only while watching the film, enthralled but also deeply unsettled, that I fully realized just…
RidaMay 30, 2020The year is 1955. I'm in a movie theater watching The Night of the Hunter. I keep shouting "WHAT INTERESTING BIRTHMARKS!" whenever Mitchum's LOVE/HATE knuckle tattoos are shown. Eventually an usher tapes a popcorn tub to my face as a makeshift muzzle. The crowd cheers when…

The night of the Hunter is one of the greatest works of American Cinema to come out of the 1950s. It is beautifully written, and the shots are both stunning and chilling. The use of shadows especially, almost Caligarian in nature really brought everything together. 9/10
The film didn't have much tension as I'd hoped at first, but it did pick up in the second act. The heartwarming moments for these kids in the third act were great. When Rachel Cooper pulled out the shotgun, iconic right there.

Rating: 9/10 This movie is fantastic. Suspenseful and heartwarming in a way I have never seen before. Both plot and cinematography are beautiful and simply well done. Aside from a few continuity errors and general goofs, I have no complaints. I will definitely be watching it again!

Very beautifully shot scenes but very boring up until the one hour mark where it’s incredible however 1 hour of mid can not be made up 30 minutes of beauty I will rewatch when I get my criterion or my kino Lorber overall solid 8.7/10 worth the watch but maybe do it on blu ray
Absolutely brilliant thriller. To say this was the only film Charles Laughton ever directed he directs it like a master. Incredible performance from Robert Mitchum and some amazing child performances which we all know don’t go too well. It’s short, tense and brilliant
