Atom User Reviews for The Metropolitan Opera: Akhnaten (2019)
The Music, singers, score and conductor were wonderful beyond belief. 5/5. Whoever did the costuming had no idea what he was doing. A mosh of Elizibethan, Voodoo, and downright grimy. 0/5
monumentally profound. this production of Akhnaten is Art at its highest level, transformational in its depth
Loved it. Loved the music. Loved the costumes. The performance was like a waking dream.
I have had the CD of Akhnaten and I've loved listening to the music for years. I'm so happy I was able to see the Met's performance at my local theatre! Akhnaten is stunning, beautiful, mesmerizing, epic. A once in a lifetime opportunity.
I was not really too excited to see this, as I was unmoved by Adams' "Nixon in China" several years ago, and generally turned off by serial music. However, this exceeded my wildest expectations. The sets and technical work were outstanding, and the cast, especially Larusdottir, Bridges, and James were outstanding. But my highest praises are for the moving performance of Anthony Roth Costanzo in the title role. His soaring Counter-tenor was always heard above the orchestration and the other voices. I would certainly see it again! Thank you!
Visually Stunning
Staging, costumes, singing, juggling, lighting, choreography and story were all epic. I would see it again if it were possible, but this was the last showing. I was in tears because the artistry and creativity were just awe inspiring.
This was an amazing opera. Great costumes and wonderful music. The cast was fantastic. Go see.
Production concept and costumes were magnificent and complemented the music
A must see. You won't get many more chances but if you are a late 20th century opera fan, you MUST NOT miss this.
Music is beautiful and powerful. I wish the camera had stayed on the entire stage during the more active scenes, instead of closeups of the different elements. I am used to being able to take everything in and deciding where my focus needs to be. I guess that is something you sacrifice by not being there in person. Loved the behind the scenes stuff during intermission.
Didn't get the music, the acting, the costumes, the direction, juggling. Nah.
Beautiful costumes with a very talented cast
Lush costumes and make-up. Imaginative modern opera. Haunting music.
Phenomenal performance and production!
the theater is awful
This was an outstanding performance. The music, staging, costumes, juggling, singing, monologuing, and theatrical acting were of a highest degree.
Very interesting new production but I’m not sure I would run to see it again.
I have never seen anything so musically boring and repetitive. I guess there aren't many operas written for a countertenor. I'd love to see him in something else. This was awful.
fantastic
Incredible show! Wildly visual, excellent score. Not your grandfather's opera
Visually stunning and emotionally powerful. The music was sublime and the production mesmerizing. Outstanding performances, especially Anthony Roth Costanzo, J'Nai Bridges, Zachary Jones, and Disella Larusdottir. I'll be thinking about this for days ~
