There is no surface on Earth that Elliott Gould can't use to light a match.
Alex EngquistNov 13, 2013Maybe the calmest thriller ever made, so when the ending comes it's like a thunder clap on a quiet evening. That isn't to say it doesn't get the blood pumping with a coke bottle moment that may be the most shocking thing since Cagney's grapefruit, with an undertone of…

few movies have pulled off “guy talking to himself” this well
cookieApr 21, 2020[Me, generally enjoying a film but feeling vaguely as if I don’t fully grasp whatever subtext or characterizations Altman has woven into it as I know both he and Raymond Chandler are generally more thoughtful than to make something to be viewed on a purely surface level,…

A great moody film that views the neo-noir genre in a satirical lens. Elliot Gould gives what maybe is his best performance.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Great filmmaking. Intro sequence is a perfect encapsulation of the movie - incredible acting by the cat!! did not expect to like it so much! Highly recommend. (Includes extended scene with homophobia and blackface but otherwise good)

elliot gould’s performance and “aura” is what makes this everyone else is kinda lackluster and somewhat unlikeable. he brings that 70’s masculinity to the table, he reminded me of a jewish version of tom selleck in this. tall hairy men with high pitched voices that complain a lot
Such an intriguing movie. Many captivating scenes with a couple clunky ones sprinkled in. Definitely worth a rewatch at some point down the line.

Enjoyed Gould as the smart aleck private eye. Some of the points didn’t matchup as neatly as desired. A little long winded.
One of the most nihilist leads in all noir films, I come back to this one every couple of years.
