Say what you will about this movie, it easily has the most opening title cards I’ve seen in my LIFE I was at a mystery screening, so a roomful of theater-goers was anxiously anticipating the film reveal, only to be greeted by a festival’s-worth of title cards. The whole…

This is the most mid movie ever and it’s kinda a shame that it’s extremely mid. Because this is an indie stop motion film so there is a lot to support here. This is full of ideas, great shop motion/2D animation and a good message of using creativity for kindness than…

In a word: “transcendent”. A wonderous example for animation is cinema. From the director of Your Friend the Rat comes the most anti-Pope film I’ve ever seen. Based. Every aspect in filmmaking comes together to make for a film that feels like you’re being transported to a…

Stop motion is my favorite form of animation and I love history, so I thought this was going to be a home run for me. But they told the story in the most boring way possible. And it had some pretty slow pacing that make it a bit tough to sit through. Its original songs…

I enjoyed this. The animation reminds me of like the old Christmas ones. I really liked it. The story is pretty good too.

Held by children's interest, which surprised me considering the subject matter and lack of momentum. It's honestly hard to know who the target audience is. The simple but charming stop-motion makes it worth a watch. Plus Matt Berry as the Pope. Inspired casting!

I was looking forward to this movie when it was announced, but I was worried it wouldn't show where and lucky it got a showing at my local Regal. The film acts as a biopic to Leonardo da Vinci, which I should note: I will not be basing this review of historical accuracy- I…

It’s charming in its own modest way (it ain’t Laika), but the simplistic character design is made up for with energy and creativity. Whether all the cadavers, complex inventions, existential musings, themes of progress and censorship, and politics will alienate the wee ones remains to be seen – but, again, at least it’s not pandering. The Inventor is charming and modest but also honest and true – a rarity these days. Hurry up and check it out before Gen Z cancels Leonardo for being a misogynist.

Despite its heavy-duty subject matter, the film co-directed by Capobianco and Pierre-Luc Granjon is filled with welcome humor of both the visual and verbal varieties.

Thankfully, 2023 continues to be a banner year for animation of all kinds, with The Inventor proving that its traditional techniques of animation—done with such skill, heart and passion—are just as timeless as the man who inspired their use here.
