Atom User Reviews for The Hate U Give
Hands down the best movie of 2018 so far... I took my 17 year old son to see the movie. We had dialogue about the movie for a least the next few hours after leaving the theater. The movie spoke to the painful world that we live in, the reality is real and resonated throughout the movie. The movie was written and it most definitely sent the message that it was intended to send... America, please wake up...ALL LIVES MATTER!
This movie was everything that I hoped that it would be and more. It definitely did not disappoint! I plan on seeing it at least 2 more times in the theaters and buying the DVD when it comes out. I read the book and the movie was on point with a few twists. I encourage everyone to support it!
Great movie, great cast, great director. Everyone must see this movie!
This was an amazing movie and left me both emotional and angry that this is OUR reality now. My only hope is that this movie open a positive dialogue for CHANGE
This movie shows the reality of today’s society.
It’s amazing movie I ever see. You guys should watch this , it will make you think about some thing from this movie
Despite the occasional curse words, this is a great film. It is relevant, moving, and has a good message. I am definitely watching it again!
This movie should be shown in schools across America and healthy dialogue should be encouraged!
Loved it.. Was looking forward to it after reading the book, and this film followed the book pretty well and the areas where it didn't were very well done! It hit all the feelings ... joy, anger, pain and sorrow and the love of a community. I highly recommend it!
Reflex on today’s real world happening in America.
This move said everything. need to watch
this is a must see film in glad I was apart of this movie bring the whole family I think cops and people that have something against cops should watch it but mostly for the African American people we need to watch this and support # MayStarrlightshinebright
This is a repeat seeing hands down
Definitely a must see!!
Not as good as the movie 😔
While on the surface this movie can be seen as one that only confronts police brutality, it is by far much more. If that is the only message you received, you may need to go see it again to understand the conflict that Starr is truly experiencing within her own community and beyond and to fully appreciate the strength her character developed.
Good Movie
The Hate U Give is a compelling masterpiece rooted in the here and now. It is well acted, well directed and timely. African-Americans understand the struggle represented in this film and it is my hope that, like Black Panther, we are not the only ones viewing this movie. Other Americans should take friends and family to see this movie. One or more of the characters in this movie will resonate with you, but the question everyone should be able to answer is "WHY Black lives matter?" If you can do that, then you should #seeitagain.
Amazing movie!!! It is very eye opening and heartbreaking to see how differently people are treated and the tradgeties they have to endure. It’s a must see movie!
I don’t cry, but this joint brought some thug tears. Pun intended
Books should stay as books.
I love it because it is showing how really this country is and have been for decades! No justice No Peace! This is war time!
Deserves an Oscar.
Thought Blindspotting was better. I would have liked to have given this movie 3.5 stars, not 4. It tackled an awful lot, maybe too much. A very broad spectrum
Excellent movie with real life issues.
It was amazing ! Must see
GOOD MOVIE
I loved the young adult novel this movie is based off of and I loved the movie!
This movie was awesome! Managing expectations: The movie will be more relatable to some people because it is a reflection of THEIR LIFE. Others may not be able to personally relate, but those with empathy will step out of their own emotions and use the movie as a glimpse into someone else's world. The cast was phenomenal! It is definitely a movie that people should go see - especially parents with their children. It will spark conversation about racial and social relations between people of color and people of non-color. Mature people will be able to have healthy debate and conversations about bias, privilege, and accepting difference without being disrespectful or condescending.
The book was soooo much better!! However
Nothing short of amazing! Completely loved it!
Excellent film. A definite must see.
Movies that perfectly showcase how our minority communities are affected by racial, social and economic injustice will always be needed and WILL BE SUPPORTED. #BlackExcellence
If you've read the book, it lives up to the hype. 10/10 would recommend.
Perfection on the screen! The best movie on race relations since crash..... but it’s way better ..... actually it’s the best movie since ever. The imagery, symbolism, message, bravery, reality, vision.... so impactful. If every person in America sees this things would be a little; no a lot, more right.
This movie was so awesome even for the people who were outside of the African American race were like wow. It is a eye opener.
Movie of the year!
An absolutely stunning film
Everyone must see this movie.
So relevant in today’s world! Love the father figured showed him in a great light - will be taking all my nieces and nephews to see

Metacritic
Even if The Hate U Give succumbs to cliché on occasion, it remains a surprisingly bold and thoughtful studio film about racism.
Shaping the rhetoric of black activism and black liberation into accessible and demographic-spanning prose is no easy task. It is work which must be undertaken with intelligence, care and, above all, experience. It is no surprise then that the adaptation of Angie Thomas’s debut young-adult novel, The Hate U Give, into a big-budget studio picture loses much of its import in translation.
On the strength of its authentic storytelling voice and galvanizing lead performance, The Hate U Give delivers a powerful message that all the rallying and rioting and impassioned pleas in the world won’t change anything if they fall upon deaf ears.
