Synopsis

Jesus and Maria are a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. Nevertheless, they have just become parents. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence.

    If you’re having a great day and you definitely would like that to stop, watch this movie. Indescribably hard watch.  Impossible to rate. Is it effective? Absolutely. Did I hate every second of it? Yes. BUT IT WANTED ME TO.

    Remember HEREDITARY? Remember the moment when the son comes home and we're just waiting for the mom to find...it? Remember the tension and awkwardness and anxiety that came with it? That, for 90 minutes. Excellent movie.

The performances pay off. But the story elements with the funniest possibilities — the salesman, the crazed 13 year-old — dangle out there without any payoff.

The writing in The Coffee Table is almost acrobatic in its delivery, manipulating feelings and ideas by rendering deep guttural emotions in the all too familiar ways. The terror in Casas’ film is linked to the unknown. But differing from other horror films, the unknown in Casas’ film is neither ethereal nor otherworldly.
