For a movie that’s 90 percent two guys sitting at a table talking, this is pretty good. The dialogue is sharp, giving both Reagan and Gorbachev depth and humanity, and making their negotiations compelling and tense. Jeff Daniels makes for a pretty good Reagan, nailing the…
Adam ForrestSep 13, 2026POV: When a movie gives you a history lesson. Reagan vs Gorbachev. The Brink of War presents the meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev at the Reykjavík Summit in Iceland in October 1986. The goal of this meeting was to bring an end to the Cold War and…

schglkvJeff Daniels is a very good actor, but I never bought him as Ronald Reagan. From the moment he appeared, the casting felt wrong to me, and I never managed to let that go. Jared Harris fares much better as Gorbachev, but even with him doing some heavy lifting, this is…

I can usually excuse a fair bit of 'typical' and 'expected' propaganda, but this is one of those cases where I feel the need to call it out. The filmmakers' motives are as clear as daylight, and I fear that if it's not obvious to you, whether you enjoyed the film or not, then you are the target…
A film caught in its own history with no greater addition to stakes or interesting stories to tell. Performances feel more like impersonations than re-enactments. Clichés are piled upon each other for easy and obvious markers of success than actual gray area and subtlety.

Reagan talks about how the US is a land of immigrants, I wish the current president would think the same
