Flint, Michigan has a bad reputation for having corrupt leaders and citizens living in day-by-day grind and hustle. In 1908 General Motors was founded and Flint had never seen better days; that is until GM moved out. People lost their homes, people lost their wages,…

It turns out I hate the Olympics. It's not exactly this movie's fault, but I found myself very resistant to rooting for the title character when much of her Inspirational Sports Narrative (a trope that generally works for me) eventually centers around hearing people in the…

Nothing fancy, just a bare bones real life story of hard work, determination, and dreaming big. Then going and getting it done. Anyone who needs a little inspiration in their life should watch T-Rex.

Pretty solid inspirational sports documentary, until the other shoe drops. The revelation that not even an Olympic gold medal means an escape from a dire home life is given much more attention than I expected. Let's just say that this film has an uplifting ending and then a…

God that movie started so well, with great characters being built and shown, and the relationships between them being clearly established as well, but in a way that still felt subtle for a documentary.  Also really cool to see the mindset of a champion, how hard she worked…

I watched this film after seeing The Fire Inside, a based on a true story about the life of boxer Claressa Shields. And while that film is a pretty accurate retelling of the events of Ms. Shields life, even repeating whole swaths of dialouge, there's just something about…

I came to this film not knowing a thing about T-Rex the boxer, and oh my goodness this is a real gem. Maybe if you know the outcome of her story it might have slightly less impact, but since it is so well crafted a documentary the telling of her journey would be no less…

I've decided to push my recent list-making writing style into a slightly more abstract place, tossing all of my thoughts on every movie I watched within a given week into a blender and putting them all in one place. Doing so on Letterboxd would probably be even more…

You don’t have to be a boxing fan to be awed by Claressa Shields, the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport. But if you are, you’ll still be knocked out.

Inspiring as her journey may be, however, the film tracks an overly familiar arc, dwelling on Shields' disadvantaged background, teenage romance with another young boxer and family turmoil but providing limited focus on the sport of women's boxing or the complexities of obtaining training sponsorship or lucrative endorsements.

While the narrative is familiar — athlete from rough background trains fiercely, with the sport as a means of salvation — directors Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper make sure the story is all Shields's, keeping her charisma at the center.
