#madlad Mifune HELL YES. This was exactly what I needed. Stray Dog is a stifling heatwave of a dream that makes you wallow in its feverish dreamscape with no hope of erasing its stain from your skin. It's as if it has a palpable texture, a sweaty tangibility, yet it…
Lara PopApr 25, 2015More straightforward than most noir, more humanist than most procedurals, more plot-heavy than I wanted, this film tackles the idea of causation, of shared responsibility, and of consequences directly. It makes sure to show how one thing can lead to another, both in the…
Sally Jane BlackAug 29, 2020This is the first movie in history where every single character that appears on screen is sweaty

"I told him to come in or the mosquitoes would get him." Tactile cinema. The oppressive heat of Tokyo pervades the screen. Everything is sweaty, sticky, exhausted. Thick, swampy atmosphere, characters caught in molasses. Dry heat; wet bodies. Primal noir. A big city…
ScreeningNotesApr 5, 2020Stray Dog is a thrilling genre piece, an expert crime movie perfectly executed and exemplary for the place and time it was made. Akira Kurosawa's skill at bringing Western genres and narratives to Japan is so well regarded that his films in turn inspired the West. Stray Dog…
Darren Carver-Balsigerthe way that kurosawa's camera luxuriously lingers on the glistening sweat upon toshiro mifune's brow... sometimes you set a movie during a sweltering heatwave in order to achieve an oppressive thematic mood & vibe, sometimes you do it because it makes your leading man look…

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL ACTION! - HEART OF AKIRA, BLADE OF KUROSAWA Based on what I discovered online, intentionally or not, this film stands as a precursor to contemporary police procedurals and the buddy cop genre, while also ranking among the earliest detective movies –…
Rafael "Mister Movie" JovineApr 22, 2015The story is simple, pivoting around a stolen weapon belonging to an officer and the police procedural that follows. However, Kurosawa makes the characters study thematically strong and engagingly crafts the investigation portions with solid dramatic moments n thrills,…
Michael JamesNov 27, 2023The desperation of postwar Japan seeps out of the nation’s pores in torrents of sweat and blood with Akira Kurosawa’s “Stray Dog.” Set in the oppressive heat of a Tokyo summer, the director’s sophomore noir follows a police detective whose Colt pistol is stolen on a…

A different view into the mind of Akira Kurosawa, as he dives into possibly one of his most unexpected and unexplored work which nevertheless shows the tremendous range of Kurosawa's choices and greatness of none other than Toshirô Mifune as we get to see him at such a young age!
Very good (crazy that this is barely a top 10 Kurosowa) Not quite as engaging as High and Low, but possibly Kurosowas best climactic sequence? Loved the noir and internal dialogue, very good watch—visually stunning as well. Also Mifunes most transformative performance
