Rajat SureshJul 8, 2013"We made it." Plenty of this scans dated or corny now (some of it even did at the time): the clothes, the music (Skunk Anansie!), the analog production design (physical media, how quaint) but all that gets pushed aside for Bigelow's incredible, confident realization of…

This movie was made in 1995, set in 1999, centered around MiniDisc technology, and eerily prescient about some key aspects of life in 2015.

David SimsMar 6, 2023Grit and grime and glitter. Powered by a chaotic energy and a belief that the future is worth fighting for, that maybe we can make for a better future despite the horrors of the present. There’s no such thing as a good cop though. The system doesn’t allow for that. Seeing…

Near future 90s movies are always a trip. Supergangs, race riots, end of days, evilest of evil cops and, of course, killer nightclubs. This movie is all of that turned up as high as it goes. It’s a freight train of a story - dark, unsettling, and yet somehow hopeful by its end.
It is a really interesting premise, way ahead of its time, for 1995. This film oozes 90s! Overall, it was a pretty good mystery, even though I was eventually able to figure out who the true villain was before it was revealed. Should you watch this? It wouldn’t kill you not to.

Original in its day and sadly a still relevant social commentary. Despite seeing the killer coming a mile away, still has a great plot, lots of intrigue, excitement, and a minor twist at the end. And Ralph Fiennes is a greasy hot mess. Glad LA hasn’t turned out quite as bad.
The sociopolitical commentary told thru sci-fi is strongly represented in the 90s here with this visually striking offering. Fiennes is awesome, and the rest of the movie really gives off a fun punk tone.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Retro (now) future sci-fi apocalyptic neo-noir. With such a killer Anti-Hero lead. For fans of Blade Runner, Existens, Repo Man, Natural Born Killers, Near Dark 🖤
wait guys voldemort was sexy?? this is insane. however, it was a very cool and unique concept and it was done so well. juliette’s song ATE. and angela bassett is serving looks the entire way through

This is the first movie about virtual reality to deal in a challenging way with the implications of the technology. It's fascinating the way Bigelow is able to suggest so much of VR's impact (and dangers) within a movie - a form of VR that's a century old.
From the visceral plunges of the first person mind clip sequences (including a terrifying, controversy courting rape sequence) to the overwhelming finale this is a, literally, stunning event. Some directors can, thank God, still make you experience films.
A film that's prescient and mind-bogglingly ill-conceived in roughly equal measures...Strange Days is the cinematic equivalent of trip-hop, a shadowy realm of atmosphere, mood and suggestion with a decidedly drugged-up, post-apocalyptic feel. But the many things Strange Days gets right are negated by the things it gets wrong.
