Synopsis
Lila (TALIA BALSAM) is an artist who teaches at a community college and has built a modest rural paradise in New York's Catskill Mountains with her husband, Edgar (SCOTT COHEN). Soon after their teen daughters head off on summer adventures and her best friend Gigi (ANDRUS NICHOLS) begins chemotherapy, Edgar reveals he's started a new family with another woman, leaving Lila alone for a season of explosive grief and self re-discovery.

South Mountain suggests that the moments that break us can also give us the space and excuse to grow and re-mold ourselves in new ways. There’s joy in those broken spaces.

As highlighted by its pitch-perfect finale, South Mountain demonstrates a realistically complex conception of stock ideas like “vengeance,” “moving on” and “healing,” and Ethan Mass’s cinematography echoes the material’s dualities in its delicate interplay of light and dark. Guiding the material from start to finish, however, is Balsam.
