american courtroom dramas have not prepared me for France's primarily vibes-based court system
dan pFeb 12, 2023the nesquik scene… we try to clean up after ourselves and keep our worst contained, but daughters will follow into the kitchen, drink from the same bowl. watch intently and sort out what you do & don’t want to be, only to grow up and fear what was there, already inside you.
LauraOct 9, 2022pure, shattering brilliance. i need to see Alice Diop's docs but i remain struck by the way the film's first extended courtroom scene is shot so matter-of-factly (Wisemanesque, even down to the film's title) just to give way to the second half's escalating match cuts and…

Very interesting, off-kilter courtroom docudrama that uses actual non-fiction testimony and the autobiographical experience of documentary filmmaker Alice Diop who attended the trial of a Senegalese immigrant who committed infanticide. Was immediately impressed by the level…
Josh LewisOct 17, 2022Masterpiece. The gaze of arthouse cinema, its laws and academic rigor and morals, are completely incapable of confronting in any way the generational trauma of black women. compositionally peerless. So gripping in how it expands with every moment, one long gasp.
Sam B.Dec 20, 2022The monstrous mother recontextualized as an everyday human; a courtroom drama completely disinterested in guilt or innocence, choosing to find resonance in what’s said and left hanging in the air instead. Who would think a film about a child murderer could have so much…

Stumped. There’s not really anything I think I could add that hasn’t already been written about this—it’s framing is phenomenal, it’s dialogue well written and acting so incredibly layered. For something centered around an event so upsetting it’s so beautiful. There’s…
PaulJan 12, 2023Centered on a trial based on a true life case in which a Senegalese woman killed her own infant daughter, Alice Diop’s Saint Omer mines this extremely unique case for some very harsh truths about motherhood, womanhood, the immigrant experience, …. and so much more.…
Kevflix And ChillSep 9, 2022On the inhospitable shores of Berck-sur-Mer, France, where the sounds of the tide mingle with a woman’s breathless running, is where Alice Diop’s narrative-feature debut “Saint Omer” begins. It is a taught, bewitching court procedural, where pomp and circumstance, where the…

My biggest gripe with this film was its disregard for the concept to “show, not tell”. A huge chunk of this film consisted of courtroom dialogue, and while I’m aware this was an intentional choice, it still felt like it dragged way too long. Otherwise the cinematography was great
Saint Omer is an evocative experience that matter-of-factly displays the unknowability of the human soul, mother-daughter bonding & the intense isolation one of immigrant origins goes through.
