KarstenFeb 10, 2017The story of the Negro in America is the story of America. It is not a pretty story. An absolute gut punch of a line in a film that incisively supports its thesis.

54/100 Apart from episodes of Biography and American Masters, there doesn't appear to be a straightforward biographical documentary about James Baldwin, who clearly merits such treatment—not just because he was one of the 20th century's greatest American minds, but because…

I just really wish the visuals did the message justice
Mia K.Dec 1, 2016The further we get from the 20th century, the more James Baldwin seems like its most important public American intellectual. His television appearances present an erudite, unassuming figure whose natural wit is visibly suppressed as collateral damage of his attempt to tamp…

“When the Israelis pick up guns, or the Poles, or the Irish, or any white man in the world says "Give me liberty, or give me death.” The entire world applauds. When a black man says exactly the same thing word for word, he is judged a criminal, and treated like one.”
I absolutely loved this documentary. James Baldwin is someone I really look up to, so hearing his words and how he became such a prolific figure was wonderful. I was truly captivated and I'd not only recommend this documentary to anyone, but I'd also rewatch it if given chances.
Honestly surprised with how much I liked this, the pacing was slow at times (beware iPad kids your attention spans might not last) but in general it was gripping and incredibly directed film. I’d never heard of James Baldwin before this and now I can’t wait to read his books!

Intriguing, but far more academic/documentary than I foolishly assumed. Better to watch in parts than all at once to be appreciated better.
Very stirring essay with powerful and eye-opening images. A self assessment comes due to determine what you’ve done to change the nation.

This is a film that should be mandatory across America in both public schools and universities. Should be everywhere for people to see.
