I feel like I just witnessed color in film for the first time. There is a lot to love about Ran. It's way of finding heart and beauty in a story fueled by hatred and tension is one of my favorite aspects, I suppose. But then there's the color. And the editing. And…
KarstenFeb 1, 2020learned a lot about proper weapon usage from this one! guns? for cowards horses? for trampling fire? for castle-burning swords? for vengeance arrows? for bundling together to teach your chaotic sons a metaphor about unity daggers? for non-lethally slicing your…
mia lee vicinoMar 17, 2015Chaos. Yet, there is hardly anything chaotic about Ran. A certain degree of harmony is always present, regardless of what is depicted on screen, be it war, manipulation, betrayal, or masssacre. A field trampled over by horses yet undisturbed, soldiers marched and chanted…

if Kurosawa made a 3 hour film of just clouds and grass I’d probably watch it every day
Emily HouselJan 3, 2016"It was bound to happen eventually." The natural elements overrun and invaded by bodies & blood red. War is unnatural, turning kings into fools & fools into kings.
Josh LewisJan 27, 2014I find it the hardest to rate the 5 star films, especially when they are epics. It is much easier to rate films like Raging Bull simply because while there are a lot to praise, mostly the praise falls on the director, camera and acting. In films like Once Upon a Time…

As someone who has been watching films for almost a decade, I rarely get 'that' emotion anymore. That emotion is the one you had after watching what you now consider to be the film that got you into films. Ran was able to supply me with that feeling today. To be honest, I…
SethsreviewsOct 31, 2022On this viewing, it occurred to me that this movie has essentially the same message as It’s a Wonderful Life, but the story is inverted. Instead of a poor man who discovers the meaning of true wealth after a lifetime of sacrifice, a rich man discovers the meaning of true…

First time I watched this was in my high school’s senior year english class; This is the second time im seeing it The imagery is iconic, performances are spectacular, and it’s great to watch, but it’s not something I see myself wanting to revisit again
An epic of legendary proportions, Kurosawa really outdid himself here. The cinematography is stunning and the writing (based upon one of Shakespeares best plays) is breathtaking, making “Ran” not only one of Kurosawa’s best pieces but one of the best films of all time. 10/10

A sweeping epic w/ fantastic source material, forming a compelling story with layers of intrigue & tension. Insane sense of scale. Gorgeously composed w/ beautiful scenery, costumes, and sets. A momentous achievement in so many ways, but a couple scenes didn't fully work for me.
Everything about this is what you could say for pretty much all of Kurosawa's work in that it's brilliant and a masterpiece in every aspect. For me though,I didn't get into it as much as his other films, but there are amazing set pieces and battle sequences. I'm still blown away.

This is the most beautiful film I have ever seen, and yet Kurosawa was going blind while directing it?! That man was put through so much during production, and was able to produce an absolute masterpiece. That is true passion for his craft, and definitely shows in the product.
Skriver en review her for gutta. Faen for en film, fantastisk bra skrevet, noe av det mer episke cinematographyen jeg har sett. En av de rareste og dramatiske dødscenen jeg har sett. Og faen hvor mange må ha brekt alle beina i kroppen for denne filmen.
