Synopsis
Amanda and her stepfather Martin struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda’s mother Leslie, who has dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? And, if so, who is responsible – a spouse, a child, an institution – for making such a determination? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the repercussions spiral out of their control. Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The Taste of Things), Academy Award nominee Tom Courtenay (45 Years), Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights), and Florence Hunt (Bridgerton) star in this unflinching drama. The film won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.

queen at sea is an incredibly tough watch for anyone who's ever had to care for an elderly loved one. an incredibly emotional film, one that i will happily not revisit again just because how hard it was. there's so much understanding towards every single character, their…
lena 🔮Oct 17, 2026Just soul crushing but it does affirm my stance that Juliette Binoche is our best working actress. She’s incredible yet again.

The ending of this takes a fairly audacious, bluntly sudden swing that could prove divisive, and I certainly wasn't sure what to make of it in the immediate aftermath. But letting it sink in a bit more, I'm feeling like it is just another facet of the brilliant entirety of…
CalvinLawOct 25, 2026Left me with a lot to think about. The whole discussion around elderly people and their sexuality already feels underexplored, and the film gets even more interesting when it brings three generations into the picture. Everyone has their own reasons, and most of them make…
RealkinoshitOct 19, 2026It turns out the only thing more devastating than Make Way for Tomorrow/Tokyo Story is a version of that story where everyone involved is genuinely trying their best, not merely parents but children and even police, social workers, and caregivers. But when it comes to how…

Appropriately and unavoidably bleak, and keenly understated, this is nevertheless a quietly enthralling piece of cinema, grappling with dementia both morally and mentally. Despairing, hugely compassionate work.

This is a film that feels like its every frame, every nuance, every tension-filled line of dialogue has been pored over in the search for precision, and while it may look and feel like a fairly conventional tale of frayed lives and dysfunction, it’s anything but.

As much as Binoche is the backbone of Queen at Sea, Courtenay and Calder-Marshall’s raw performances are no less impressive.
