Synopsis
France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse's first moments of freedom. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.

In French, the title is “Portrait de LA jeune fille en feu” which means “portrait of THE lady on fire”. For it to be “a lady” the French title should’ve been “portrait d’une jeune fille en feu”. Subtle but changes everything, Heloise isn’t just any woman on fire, she’s THE woman.

Ana B is "meh" onPortrait of a Lady on FireIm NOT saying it was a bad movie, it just wasn't for me. I'm not really into longish films with 60% silence 40% dialogue. I only liked the last 20 minutes, although the final scene not. I honestly expected way more due to its fame.

What the film excels at, however, is the anticipatory desire. It builds slowly, concluding with a stunning sequence that is all breathless remembrance and self-satisfaction that is both wordless and impalpable. The film will seem the height of romantic desire to some, but will be a slow burn for others.
