TIFF 2023 #26: Special Presentations (World Premiere) We were supposed to watch this on 35mm and the projector broke. After seeing the movie, I wish the digital projector broke too.

Of the dozen or so actor-turned-director features at TIFF this year few had as endearing a concept as Poolman; a Big Lewbowski-esque paranoid stoner-noir with a long-haired, short-shorts-attired Chris Pine as the himbo-goofball city council activist/pool cleaner Darren…
Josh LewisSep 12, 2023Chris Pine remains the best Chris despite this
Katey RichSep 11, 2023Apparently this movie started off as a joke between Chris and his co-writer Ian while filming WW1984. I don’t know what the joke was but man it ain’t funny. Not two bad movies coming out of WW1984.

Was hoping for another 'Under the Silver Lake' but just got 'Above the Cyan Pool' :( Feels like entire chunks of this movie just got left on the cutting room floor
Amanda the JediJun 12, 2024I think this would have worked for me much more if I didn’t hate Chris Pine’s character. The supporting cast all have their moments—Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, Clancy Brown and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus Dewanda Wise serves as the smokin’ femme fatale in this noir comedy…
Kevflix And ChillSep 11, 2023equal parts inherent vice, under the silver lake, the long goodbye, and the big lebowski. i like to think chris pine got a studio budget just to film himself and his buddies goofing around los angeles. lots of fun, and a solid new entry into my favorite genre: stoner noir

Chris Pine is good and the cast is fun but the story is disjointed, nonsensical and almost nonexistent. The premise was interesting and there were a few scenes that showed promise but the film was trying too hard to be Chinatown. One of the worst films I’ve seen all year
Was this only for a select 10 or so insane fans? Surely a target audience was in mind because I have no idea who would want to purposefully suffer through this. The posters bring excitement. The title brings comedy and mystery. The cast brings fandoms. Unfortunately, all of these flopped harder…

This movie was all over the place. It’s not funny at all and it is slow yet chaotic at the same time. The ending was somewhat interesting which is the only thing that saved it from a full dislike.
Terrible film. Actors are fine but no story nothing. It’s just terrible. It’s not funny or interesting. One of the worst I’ve ever seen.

An odd LA story, but it’s a good story with a great cast. I love the LA vibe and the whole “China Town” parallels. A great watch.
It deep as it could have went. The cast is great but that is the only good thing. I am disappointed.

One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I cannot get my 2 hours back. Dumb. Stupid. Do not waste your money. Was it a supposed to be a comedy, drama or mystery? They hit the marks on all parts. I’m still trying to process the stupidity.
if i didn’t get the tickets free i would have walked out and demanded my money back

I take no vicious pleasure in saying that Poolman, a movie that Pine co-wrote, directed, and stars in, is not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out.
Poolman is an unfunny spoof of neo-noir thrillers with hazy direction, even messier storytelling, and unbearable dialogue.
