Synopsis
From the legendary Studio Ghibli and Academy Award®-nominated director Isao Takahata, comes an action-packed ecological fable about the clash between nature and human civilization.
The tanuki (raccoon dogs) of Tama Hills find their fun-loving community under attack when their quiet woodlands are threatened by encroaching developers looking to create still more houses and shopping malls. Desperate to survive, the tanuki band together and learn the ancient art of transformation, shape-shifting into a comical variety of humans and spirits as they undertake a last-ditch plan to scare away the humans and save their home, in this deeply affecting, funny and heartfelt look at what it means to live in the modern world.

If there is one thing in this world that I am sure of, it would be that 'Pom Poko' would hands down win the award for most bizarre use of testicles in film history!
Paul ListerMay 5, 2020studio ghibli is great because on the one hand you get harrowing films where you watch young children die of starvation and then you also get films where racoons perform magic with their nutsacks

Y'all gonna kill me for this but I liked Over the Hedge better
James (Schaffrillas)Jan 19, 2023if id realized there was a ghibli movie about eco-terrorist racoons using their magical testicles to disuade the construction of golf courses and theme parks, i wouldve checked it out sooner

sorry but if you can't relate to a bunch of chubby little hedonist raccoons that engage in whimsy and mischief to thrive while being worn down by gentrification and the capitalist grind, you are not my people and also you're probably straight.

Really bizarre, but I don't mind that. The story is a bit of a mess, so it's one of a few Ghibli movies that I don't see myself rewatching. But it was really hilarious to watch with my little brother, on account of all the, uh, raccoon scrotum stuff.
It was an interesting way to spread a message about destroying of our world, but I think the wrong audience was reached. The concept of this movie is so bizarre and it was as if the studio just told them to do whatever the hell they wanted. I am left speechless that this exists.
This one was an interesting one lol. Just to think Isao Takahata released this after GOF makes me laugh. Such a serious heartbreaking movie and then this movie abt silly lil raccoons with their magical nut sacks. It was a bit boring and dragged at times. Overall good message 👍

There were some funny jokes but they were mostly balls jokes. The story was the same thing over and over and felt like all filler with way to long of scenes. The whole thing was a little too weird for me. I could barely make it through it was so boring.
Nicht schlecht aber auch ned überzeugend. Ab und zu bissl unerwartete Hodenwitze
🫎🫎1/2 Third film for my Studio Ghibli class. The concept of raccoons being able to transform sounded so fun, but then this movie was so unbelievably boring. The only scene that stood out to me was when they portrayed humans as gods and they were placing down buildings and whatnot, showing how…

Some of the best Ghibli visuals. An urban areas overcome by nature are one of my favorite sights to behold. The story was socially relevant commentary, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the narration/documentary vibe. I found it hard to get attached to any characters. Overall liked it!
a really lovely movie. i loved the social commentary on how deforestation hurts animals, that is still such a pressing issue many years later. the spirit parade is probably my favorite sequence from studio ghibli that i've seen so far. it was amazing.
