Synopsis

Charlie Hunnam stars as Henri “Papillon” Charrière, a Parisian safecracker who is framed for murder and exiled to the brutal and remote Devil’s Island penal colony. Of course, that doesn’t mean Papillon has any intention of staying put there indefinitely. So when he meets the wealthy counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), he sees it as an opportunity and strikes a deal: Papillon will protect Dega, if Dega finances his plan to escape. From there a dangerous adventure filled with hard labor, high seas and solitary confinements unfolds, based on Charrière’s own bestselling autobiographies.

I have never been for annoyed or frustrated with a character as I was with Dega in this film. Very slow and really no action.

But for all the period detail, characters are a little too healthy and well-scrubbed to be convincing and the actual look of the film is video-flat and dull — ugly.

Mr. Malek gives an eccentric performance, but he won’t make anyone forget Dustin Hoffman, whose original Dega was an endearing coward, a fatalist and a masterpiece.

A sumptuous-looking but slow-moving prison drama that at times will have you dreaming about an escape of your own.
