#1 gizmo fanMar 28, 2018still holds up as one of the most entertaining and well rounded sci-fi action movies of the past decade in my eyes. by the end of this rewatch i was transported back to 2013 when i saw this at the drive in at least twice that summer with my friends. so glad to see it’s aged…

This was slightly overlooked at the time but I don’t know why. The plot is good, you’ve got a great cast with Charlie Hunnam as the lead, theirs some good ideas and the script is ok but the main thing is the action is among the best I’ve ever seen. Incredible CGI and great fun
why did they have to name the main robot a romani slur? i’m in love with charlie day so i forgot what was going on whenever he came on screen. more nerds with tattoos please. not a fancy film but a fun movie. again, why the slur cmon man

3.5/5 - I love the godzilla universe so much and I realllly wanted to love this movie, but sadly it wasn’t really up to my tastes. I don’t mind a bit of predictability and typical action movie tropes, but this kind of went over my tolerance levels + I felt they needed to hire a better dialect coach…
PEAK CINEMA. Giant robots fighting Giant aliens. The cast, while not the most recognizable, is filled with a lot of talent. Absolutely stunning visuals for its time. The plot, the action, the dialogue, the characters, are all done perfectly. This is one of my favorite movies ever
7.4/10 Really enjoyable monster movie. The rating could be a little high because I’m a sucker for monster movies, but the sounds, most of the acting, and the action all were good. The monsters were cool and if Charlie Day’s character wasn’t in the movie, it would’ve been better.

Director Guillermo del Toro knows that the charm in the clash of scale - or armor-plated titans isn't necessarily tied to the low budgets and laughable production design of those guilty-pleasure TV shows. And with Pacific Rim, he cracks the code.
If this is the best we can do in terms of movies - if something like this can speak to the soul of audiences - maybe we should just turn over the cameras and the equipment to the alien dinosaurs and see what they come up with.
It is a ridiculously entertaining (and often just plain ridiculous) monster-robot movie that plays like a gigantic version of that “Rock ’Em, Sock ’Em Robots” game from the 1960s, combined with the cheesy wonderfulness (or should it be wonderful cheesiness?) of black-and-white Japanese monster movies from the 1950s.
