There is a scene, during Wilkerson's sojourn in Germany, where an interlocutor makes a fatal challenge to her thesis and by extension the thesis of the film. In short, says the character, whatever similarities may exist between systems of hierarchy, the ultimate ends of…
Jamelle BouieJan 18, 2024at one point when pitching her thesis, author isabel wilkerson (the towering aunjanue ellis-taylor) says “i want to be in the story, really inside the story.” over the next two hours, she makes her wish a reality, traveling the world to explore the cruelty of caste…
zoë rose bryantSep 11, 2023ORIGIN is a sprawling work of art from Ava DuVernay. Seeks to educate on the fundamentals of caste & how it continues today. Undeniably moving in its lyrical writing, unforgettable images & persuasive ideas. I can understand why many would feel this is better suited for a…

If you want me to take your movie seriously there is one thing you absolutely must not do and it's have Nick Offerman show up as a plumber wearing a MAGA hat
Kevin YSep 10, 2023honestly quite audacious but the execution is, by and large, not v compelling. disappointed!
David SimsOct 28, 2023The only movie I’ve seen that ends with Trayvon Martin giving the protagonist a reassuring nod for overcoming her writers block. Literally cannot think of a more exploitative, insensitive ending. Makes its (true, but obvious) point within about 20 minutes and then…

I’m very torn about Ava DuVernay’s ORIGIN. On one hand, it has some VERY strong moments, particularly when it focuses on Wilkerson’s personal life (and I’ve run out of words to describe great performances: what Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor does here is a whole new level of…

carmen margaritaJan 2, 2024or “what no class analysis does to a mf.” Collapses 500 pages of political theory into a thesis so barebones yet coarsely didactic that it fails despite hours of reemphasis to prove its merit beyond homogenizing world suffering and giving scholars new semantics to quibble…

Jon Bernthal is going after that Liam Neeson supporting player run of the early 2000s. This is me avoiding talking about race in a Queue review.
Very powerful movie that makes you think, feel, and ponder new ideas. Very emotional. I was fine till the last fifteen minutes or so and then I cried multiple times! Slow at times but overall a great movie.

Jeez everyone including me was crying by the end. Very powerful. Definitely gonna read her books now. Curious to see how much more the book adds to the movie. Very good/interesting topics/takes and I’m excited to read the book to get more info on it. Good cast! Husband was cute
A detailed look at the intersectionality between slavery in the US, the Holocaust, and the Untouchables (Dalits) of India. Wish the story wasn’t so disjointed and was filmed more like a documentary, but still loved its intention in educating people on the diff b/w caste & race.
I guess 2020 was a weird time for sure because I never heard of this book! Wish I had read it first. It was powerful. Taught me a lot. Will be googling more later. Felt like a documentary but also dealt with everyday real life. Because this is life. Award season snub for sure.

I thought i’ve watched impactful, moving , thought provoking stories before. nothing i can quite be compared to this. from the social analysis of caste so in depth it feels like a documentary to the actual life of the author. Words cannot describe the emotions, the heavyness.

This movie made me apply to graduate school. Made me want to do more to be apart of the conversation on racism vs caste system.
This movie is the best movie made in the last decade. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is absolutely incredible. Ava did an amazing job with this film. Don't walk. Run!!! To go see this movie.

It’s not a fun time at the movies, but it’s an informative and worthy one.
Rich in thought, Origin is a dense, forceful masterwork, and, quite simply, the most radical film of DuVernay’s career.
I do not regret having seen it, and with all there is to recommend it, I feel comfortable suggesting you seek it out upon release. But do so with tempered expectations.
