Synopsis

As a rebellious and motherless child, Ophelia is taken into Elsinore Castle by Queen Gerturde as one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting. Soon enough, Ophelia captures the affections of the young Prince Hamlet. A passionate romance kindles between the two in secret as the kingdom is on the brink of war amidst its own political intrigue and betrayal. When Hamlet's father is murdered and the prince's wits begin to unravel into an insatiable quest for vengeance, Ophelia sharply navigates the rules of power in Denmark all while struggling to choose between her true love and her own life.

    taught me that women have all the power in them to fight. We don’t need to please men through manipulation to win, we can use wit, intelligence, and strength to triumph. basically u dont always have to be femme fatale to succeed.

    This being inspired by Shakespeares' Hamlet I expected way more madness, it is rather tame in comparison. But it still is a brilliant story by itself. Daisy's Ophelia is absolutely perfect. And Naomi's Gertrude is really good.

    Hamlet but from another point of view. My favorite painting is Ophelia by John Everett Millais, so I can do nothing else than appreciate the scenery

    Some very beautiful and poignant scenes but overall a bit too shallow. Felt a bit more like a Disney movie.

The result is pretty to look at, with the misty lakes and foreboding forests of Denmark beautifully photographed and the costumes lavishly designed, but the sad (and boring) result has none of the bold thrust or festering passion originally created by the Bard.

Although an intriguing way to deconstruct and reassemble a story familiar to most people who have taken high school English, Ophelia doesn’t live up to its promise perhaps because the lead character, even after having been “expanded,” is still rather flat.

The best part of Ridley’s performance is her plodding, heavy-footed walk that reminds us this well-groomed lady is still a stubborn child underneath her fancy dress. She has a blank, open face that absorbs the court’s machinations and reflects little back until she decides to act insane.
