Synopsis

The behind the scenes of the filming of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960), a landmark of the French New Wave film movement.
Moviegoers are saying
Richard Linklater's French New Wave tribute divides audiences between cinephiles who appreciate its meticulous recreation of Godard's 'Breathless' and viewers who question whether this loving homage justifies its existence. Critics at Cannes embraced it as 'basically a fun time' while others dismissed it as elaborate cosplay, creating a polarizing reception that mirrors the pretentious film culture it both celebrates and gently mocks.

Watching it again, I recognized that Linklater’s film is itself an expression of a certain approach — a consciousness — toward cinema’s pleasures and possibilities, one that at once embraces the art’s past and insists on its future.

Sly, wry, adorable and deplorable, Guillaume Marbeck is priceless as the endlessly irritating and yet frustratingly charismatic Godard in one of the year’s brightest pictures, a rare standout in a sea of multiplex mediocrity.

Nouvelle Vague isn’t a portrait of Godard by Linklater but a feature-length thank-you note, from Richard to Jean-Luc, for freeing him to make films his own way.
