Just one of the sweetest concert films. Warm and fragile and drenched in... well not exactly death, but death-adjacent. Neil Young is our greatest chronicler of being near death but not (yet) of it.

When it comes to Canadians, apart from Jonathan & Lise, Neil Young is probably my favorite. Concert wise you know exactly what you're going to get with our Neil and this 2005 gig at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville feels beautifully intimate. Neil Young is one of those…

If Stop Making Sense is about the boundless optimism of youth, Heart of Gold works as its antithesis -- with every shot of Neil's haggard body reminding the viewer of their own mortality. There is a crossfade that happens around the halfway point that will linger with me…

Good Canadian boy Neil Young teams up with master filmmaker Jonathan Demme and some of his sangin' buddies to play the heck outta the Prairie Wind album and a few classics off the Harvest and Harvest Moon albums. Neil put on the show as a possible last concert pending an…

Stop Making Sense is pretty much lightning in a bottle, so it's entirely unfair to expect this to be on that level (of course a sixty-year-old man isn't going to have the energy of David Byrne in his prime). But this also doesn't have the quirky pleasures of a smaller film…

The broom has never sounded better. And yes, of course I played along on guitar throughout the entire movie.

Seriously how are Demme's live shows so incredibly well mastered? I listened to this film while working today and it was just so beautiful. Never heard a more beautiful broom in my life.

At the film's intimate best, it gives a guitar's perspective of the troubadour. He plucks his instrument as he plays our heartstrings. It's movie and music bliss.
